Obituary for Donald A. Pofahl, Sr.
SFC Donald Albert Pofahl, Sr. (US Army, Retired), age 83, of Janesville, WI, died Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville. Don was born on June 29, 1933, in Little Rock, AR, the only child of German and Irish immigrants, August Pofahl and Wilene Everett. He joined the United States Army in 1958, and after basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, he served in Germany, Vietnam and Korea as a combat engineer. Don later worked in Rockford and Janesville as a recruiter, receiving an Army Commendation Medal for Outstanding Service. He retired in 1978 from the Army and worked at Fairbanks Morse. Don prided himself on his inventiveness and sense of humor. His cats adored him, and he enjoyed military history, cruising backroads in his 1977 Mercury Cougar XR7, the Arkansas Razorbacks, bass fishing and the Army.
Don is survived by Barbara, his loving wife of 47 years; son Donald of Janesville; daughter Sherry (Andrew) Johnson of Seattle, WA; grandson Marty of Seattle; and also two cherished cousins, Libby Harvey and Carolyn Welch, of Elizabethton, TN.
Private services will be held with Military Rites accorded by Kienow-Hilt VFW Post 1621. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Janesville. The family is being assisted by Hansen Funeral Home, 211 S. Main St., Janesville. Online condolences may be made at www.hansenfh.com
