Obituary for Richard A. McLaughlin
Richard Alton “Mic” McLaughlin, age 81, of Janesville, WI, died Monday, October 10, 2016, at Mercy Hospital, Janesville, due to complications of COPD. Mic was born in Barnegat, New Jersey, on May 24, 1935, to Joseph and Alice (Falkinburg) McLaughlin, the youngest of six children. He attended Barnegat High School before moving to Sterling, Illinois, graduating in 1952 from Sterling High School. He married Rose McAndrews in 1957 and they had four daughters. Mic managed Gamble’s stores in Sterling, IL, Faribault, MN and Monroe, WI, before moving back to Sterling and working as a foreman at Northwestern Steel for 15 years. He then moved to Edgerton, WI, and opened a Coast to Coast store. In 1985 he moved to Janesville and worked as a supervisor at Dorsey Trailer until they closed, then worked at Wolohan’s and Swiss Colony. While growing up on Barnegat Bay, and being accustomed to the bounties of the sea, Mic was known on occasion to trade his lobster sandwiches for peanut butter ones. In later years, Mic enjoyed traveling back to the East Coast and crabbing on the bay.
Mic is survived by his former wife, Rose McLaughlin of Janesville; his daughters: Julie (Doug) Johnson of Shannon, MS; Mary (Mike) Miatke of Whitewater, WI; Marsha McLaughlin of Oak Lawn, IL; Susan (Chad) Klimaszewski of Johnson Creek, WI; grandchildren: Jennifer Nesbitt, Garrett and Myles Johnson; Brandi and Dalton Miatke; and Jason and Max Klimaszewski. In addition to his parents, Mic was predeceased by his sister, Kathryn Claire Jones and brothers, George Joseph, Charles Martin, John Edward and Joseph Robert McLaughlin.
A memorial gathering will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at Hansen Funeral Home, 211 South Main St., Janesville. Online condolences may be made at www.hansenfh.com
