Obituary for Clara Emelie Stanchak
Clara Emelie (Hartmann) Stanchak, age 91, currently of Edgerton, WI, and formerly of Janesville, passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg, WI. Clara was born into a turbulent time on March 14, 1923, in Machtilshausen, Germany. She was the fourth child and only daughter of Rochus and Margarete (Mutzel) Hartmann. Clara's girlhood was spent in southern Germany in a farming and brewing community and her devout Catholicism was born and nurtured during these years. Clara lost two brothers to the war and both of her parents died shortly after the end of World War II. It was during the war that she met her husband, John Stanchak. They married in 1949 and continued to live in Machtilshausen until they immigrated to the United States in 1955 with three children. The family lived in Ohio, where two additional children were born. They moved to Wisconsin in 1968 and settled in Edgerton and then in Janesville. Clara and John lived together in their home in Janesville until December 23, 2013, when John passed away. Clara then went to live with her youngest daughter, Christine, in Edgerton. She loved it there and especially enjoyed the company of her two granddaughters, Anneliese and Ellen. Ms. Kelli Malicki, her caregiver, also made this time special. Kelli loved our mother and gave generously of her skills and talents to keep her active and enjoying life. After suffering a stroke on April 13, Clara was lovingly cared for by medical staff, first at Mercy Hospital and then at Agrace Hospice. Clara and family members were privileged to spend the last few days in the care of Agrace.
Clara never lost her devotion to the memories of her birth family. She was an accomplished person and instilled a sense of the value of education and self-reliance in her children. She taught herself English, helped her children with their schoolwork, became skillful at sewing and needlework, loved reading history and discussing the book she was reading. She was a faithful church member who went to Mass whenever she could and honored her God in her daily prayers. Clara's personal moral values of honesty and upright behavior influenced all of her family and those values included maintaining family connection. She kept her family close to her and gave her loyalty and love to each of her children and their families.
Clara is survived by her five children; Maria (Tom) Greulich of Woodstock, GA; Waltraud Arts of Madison, WI; Carl (Yelena) Stanchak of Colorado Springs, CO; Peter (Susan) Stanchak of Battle Creek, MI; and Christine (Kevin) Snyder of Edgerton; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews living in Ohio and Germany. Clara was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 2013; her parents in 1946 and 1947; and by her three brothers: Karl in 1942, Bruno in 1945 and Otto in 1992.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 590 S. Saint Joseph Circle, Edgerton, with Fr. David Timmerman presiding. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral on Wednesday at the church. Clara will be buried with her husband in a private service in early May at St. Joseph Parish Cemetery in Edgerton. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph's Church Building Fund or to Agrace HospiceCare.
